The figures below were the reason I began writing fiction. Recovering from a long illness, I was awake mainly at night and over a period of about six months made hundreds of these figures. I made so many I developed repetitive strain injury and was unable to use my arms so I began to dictate a novel using speech recognition software.


This first (unusable) novel contained the seeds of the three novels that were published: The Land of Decoration, The Professor of Poetry, and The Offering. It is appropriate then, that the little people helped launch The Land of Decoration; particuarly as one of the themes of novel is miniaturisation. Here they are in the foyer of Random House:

     

The little people came to feature in my nine children's stories after I gave up drawing real life people. You can see the stories by clicking the link on the left, or watch videos of them on YouTube by clicking one of the icons on the right.


The little people were modeled using toothpicks and range from two to six inches high. A coin is included in the photographs below to show scale.
